About Maria
Maria McGivern, Editor
Hi, I'm Maria McGivern. I have a master’s degree in English literature and worked for a while in libraries, before doing a 1-year, full-time post-graduate certificate in publishing. I began my editorial career by working in non-fiction books (for both adults and children) for 5 years and becoming a managing editor, before moving into medical publishing and medical communications, where I have worked as a managing editor in a medical education agency.
I have a strong interest in all areas of health, mental health, and medicine (as evidenced by the fact that I have also trained to be a teacher of the Alexander technique). I have worked on publications and projects covering a variety of medical specialties and aimed at differing audiences from patients, nurses, and pharmacists through to GPs, specialists, and drug regulators.
At this point, I have over 20 years’ experience in project-managing and editing publications and projects of different types in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. I have also worked on projects for the European, Middle Eastern, Asian, and North American markets. I’ve now worked as a freelance editor for over 10 years, largely for clients in the medical and health field as this has become my speciality area. As such, I am a member of the European Medical Writers Association, the US Council of Science Editors, and the Australasian Medical Writers Association.
I am also available for other academic, business, and technical editorial work (e.g. theses, company reports, and technical documents) and for health writing for consumers and technical writing projects.
See my LinkedIn profile for my full CV and career history.
If you feel that my skills would be useful on your projects, I would be keen to hear from you.
