What else should you as my client know?

If you decide to use my services, there are a few things you should note.

Copyright and ownership of documents

You as a client retain ownership, control, and copyright over all documents submitted to me. Any content I also create as part of the writing/editing/proofreading/project management process will become the copyright of the client, unless otherwise agreed.

Confidentiality

I will keep your details and the details of your work confidential during the course of the project and will not share them. In particular:

  • I will not discuss the nature and content of your work with anyone outside my business

  • I am happy to sign any additional confidentiality agreements that you may require.

Please note: I may later use your name and refer to projects I have worked in a general manner in my promotional material (e.g. see my current clients page.)

My advice

The comments and suggestions I make in the work I edit are intended to provide advice and guidance to you as a client. These comments are made on a ‘best endeavours’ basis based on my experience as an editor. I strongly recommend that any comments I make that have medical, legal, or other implications and any changes you make as a result are checked with a professional with expertise in those fields.

With regard to my editorial work, please note the following:

  • While I perform a reasonable amount of fact checking as part of my editing and am happy to follow any specific required guidelines and house guides, I accept no responsibility for the factual accuracy of your work, including the overall validity or accuracy of the information, the statements made, or the research conclusions reached. This is the client’s responsibility.

  • While I check the format and consistency of your references and, if agreed, the citation details, I do not read through the referenced documents to check their validity in supporting your work as part of my editing (unless specifically agreed with a client).

  • While I may rewrite text to improve clarity and fluency and to meet the demands of a particular format or audience, I do not finish incomplete manuscripts. I also do not provide research or source new references to support the writing of your manuscript, and I do not paraphrase other articles or documents for use in your manuscript.

  • While I can sometimes give advice on copyright and other legalities, I am not an expert. I strongly recommend any copyright or other legal questions be directed to a legal professional or your publisher.

  • Although my editing will enhance your work, I can’t guarantee of your acceptance for publication, a specific mark or score, or any other desired outcome as a result of using my services.

Aftercare

My aftercare service means I am happy for you to contact me with queries about what I have done and why. I am happy to re-edit parts of your work that you have directly changed as a result of my editing and comments, or to perform full revised edits and other new editorial tasks if required. If not previously allowed for in a quote, I will need to charge for these revisions and new editorial tasks separately at my hourly rate.

If you have any further questions about my editorial services or what I can do for you, please let me know.
